| Diversity
in the Digital Age
The Nerve Centre is taking the lead in a cross-border partnership to create
an audio-visual digital archive of life in Derry and Donegal over the
past century. The partnership of the Nerve Centre, Letterkenny Arts Centre,
Derry City Council's Museum Services and Donegal County Council has received
£239,000 of funding from the European Peace and Reconciliation Fund
through the Cross border Consortium, administered by Co-operation Ireland.
This exciting two-year project has two main aspects;
(1) The production of a digital archive offering a comprehensive picture
of the cultural, political and social life of both counties in the twentieth
century. The Derry/Donegal audio-visual archive will bring together photographs,
news reels, television and radio documentaries, amateur 'home movie' footage,
short films and feature length drama. This rich and diverse source material
will be made available to the public on a free standing computer kiosk
within the venues of all of the partner organisations.
(2) The provision of an educational programme of workshops and hands on,
creative activities for secondary schools in Donegal and Derry and the
development of a new ICT accreditation for the participating pupils. Each
year of the project, over 400 pupils from eight secondary schools in Donegal
and Derry will be brought together to explore important themes and historical
events within their shared heritage through the medium of multimedia technologies.
The pupils will learn skills in digital videomaking and editing, animation,
web design and digital music composition and recording. Their finished
work will feature on the digital archive.
This project will complement the highly successful Northern Ireland Digital
Film Archive, which the Nerve Centre worked upon for the Northern Ireland
Film and Television Commission. The Nerve Centre is one of six venues
where the public has free access to the Northern Ireland Digital Film
Archive and its' 55 hours of film material.
