Lottery organisation visits Nerve Centre to call on young film making talent

A funding organisation, providing thousands of Lottery pounds to encourage young people into filmmaking, visits the Nerve Centre on Wednesday 5 th May to call for more applications.

First Light, the UK Film Council’s young people’s filmmaking initiative, helps to fund and inspire the making of short digital films by young people, reflecting the diversity of their lives. To date, over 7,000 young people have created over 450 films across the UK, but First Light is now looking to uncover more of Northern Ireland’s young filmmaking talent.

The informative road-show events, held in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission (NIFTC) and media facility The Nerve Centre, are aimed at anyone who might benefit from the available funding. This might be the five to 18 year olds eligible to write , act, direct, light, edit and exhibit the First Light films. It might be the youth organisations, such as schools, youth clubs or youth community arts groups who will facilitate the First Light process. It may also be professional filmmakers, who will pass on their experience to the young aspiring filmmakers, perhaps as First Light mentors.

Leigh Thomas, First Light’s Project Manager, who will host both events, said, “It’s a great opportunity for young people, or for organisations who work with young people, to get their first taste of filmmaking. Whether you want to attend an informative presentation, need one-to-one advice, or want to see some of the First Light films, these events should help you on your way.”

First Light visit the Nerve Centre at 1pm Wednesday 5 th May at 7-8 Magazine Street, Derry BT48 9HJ .
